Spring Middle/High School Classes

Full Day Classes Start Next Week

Don’t miss the adventure! TLC’s full day classes for grade EAK-5th start next week. Students get a chance to experience dynamic, thematic units in their core class and then get exposure to unique enrichment experience in the adventure classes. This is a tremendous value and a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with other TLC students. Adventure classes this year include art, archeology, and inventions. All classes are interactive with hands-on projects. You can still register for classes at your site. Sign up today.

Free Teen Club Art Tours with Bus Transportation

7th-12th grade teens will travel by bus and visit a larger then life, outdoor exhibit at UCSD. Get exposure to a college campus as you explore these sculptures with hands-on activities. Then take a guided tour of La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art featuring international artist, John Baldessari. Baldessari features bright, colorful collections of prints that he alters and crops to create his masterpieces. Learn all about modern art as you explore these two venues with guided education programs. TLC will chaperone this field trip. We need a minimum of 20 students to participate. This is the perfect prelude for the Art Field Day and a great complement to TLC middle and high school art classes focusing on color.

Date: Monday, February 6
Time: 9 am to 2 pm (check-in at TLC La Mesa by 7:45 am)
Location: Students will travel to the museums via bus. All students should arrive at the TLC La Mesa site by 7:45am. Bus will be departing site at 8:15am.

Art Field Day

TLC will be hosting a homeschool community event on Monday, February 13 from 10am - 2 pm at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Get immersed in the arts as you explore exciting shows, hands-on art projects, lessons and more. TLC field days provide tons of experts, all in one place, for a full day of creativity. We will be announcing the line-up and schedule by early next week! Register today and get ready to be inspired!

Field Trips

USS Midway Museum

Come aboard and learn how weather affected all aspects of Midway life from launching and recovering aircraft to re-supplying the aircraft carrier at sea. Students will plot longitude and latitude positions as they participate in a simulated hurricane tracking activity. In addition, with the use of wind meters, students will track relative humidity, dew point, wind speed and temperature on board the flight deck of Midway. Our on board workshops are designed to teach Content Standards: Earth Sciences (4a, 4b, 4c, 4d).

Medieval Times

Imagine a history lesson presented by a King and his Noble Court, set within the walls of an 11th century-style castle. Every detail is painstakingly recreated as you take a personal journey back to the Middle Ages. Step back in time and experience spectacular horsemanship, amazing swordplay, medieval games of skill and an authentic jousting tournament between six brave knights of the realm. As the tournament takes place, the castle’s serfs and wenches serve your students a feast fit for a King. Menu includes garlic bread, an oven-roasted chicken quarter, a sweet corn cobette, an herb-roasted potato, chocolate chip cookie, and bottled water.

Teen Club: Air and Space Museum

Based on a college egg drop test, your student will be challenged to engineer a creative and functional impact-resistant capsule. Students work with limited materials and within a budget to design vehicles capable of protecting their "astronaut" from the impact of reentry. A great team-building project and a fun way for the world's future engineers to learn scientific method!

Community Event: Student/Parent Night at 2012 High Tech Fair

Parents, bring your 6th-12th grade students to be inspired by interactive STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) exhibits! The 2012 High Tech Fair is on Tuesday, February 7 from 5-8 pm at Del Mar Fairgrounds, Wyland Hall. The student/parent night is free (parking included), but RSVPs are required. Early Admission Kindergarten

It is time for parents of little ones to start thinking about getting students ready for kindergarten! If a child is already five, or turns five by April 1, 2012, they can participate in the TLC EAK program. They can receive instructional materials, attend classes, assemblies and field trips. Tell your friends and have them call for more information.

San Diego Museum Month

February is San Diego Museum Month! Presented by Macy’s, this popular event allows participants to enjoy half-off entry fees at 40 San Diego Museum Council member museums. Museum Month Passes may be picked up starting February 1, 2012 at any of Macy’s fourteen locations in the San Diego Area, Temecula and Imperial Valley. The passes are free to obtain while supplies last. With a pass, up to four visitors can gain admission to any of the 40 participating museums for half-price. Plus, you can use the pass all month long! From the Oceanside Museum of Art down to the Tijuana Estuary, there are ample opportunities for edutainment, creating memories and fun for the whole family.
